One technology stack across four countries

We chose to consolidate procurement, inventory, finance, and reporting on a single ERP across all four markets. The decision was not obvious.

By Pedro Parente, Founder & CEO

There is a recurring debate in cross-border distribution: should each country run on the local-language, locally-supported ERP that the country team is comfortable with, or should the group consolidate on a single stack across regions? The former optimizes for local execution; the latter for group-level visibility and discipline.

Alpha Protocol chose consolidation. Today, all four subsidiaries operate on a single instance of our ERP, customized for each country's tax and accounting requirements but unified at the data model. The decision was not without cost: the implementation in Brazil took longer than a local-only solution would have, and we sacrificed some velocity in 2024 to maintain the discipline of one stack.

The payoff is showing up in three places. First, reporting cadence. We close month-end in days, not weeks, and consolidated investor reporting follows naturally. Second, brand visibility. A brand partner that wants to know how its SKUs are selling in Mexico versus Argentina can be answered in one query, not four. Third, capital allocation. When we model whether to deepen inventory in a specific category or to extend financing to a specific channel, we run that model on a single, consistent dataset.

The strategic implication is simple: as Alpha Protocol scales, the cost of one stack falls and the value rises. A fifth or sixth country added to the group inherits a working playbook rather than requiring a new implementation. For investors evaluating distribution platforms in emerging markets, the question of “one stack or many” is a useful proxy for how the business will scale. With one stack, every new country inherits a working system. With many, every new country rebuilds from zero — paying the same integration cost over and over.
